ABOUT QUENIEVE

Hello!!! My name is Carmen. Thank you very much for taking the time to read these lines. Finally, after overcoming my well-disguised shyness, I have decided to let the people who visit QueNieve know me a little better and how this hobby, to which I love to dedicate the little free time I have, came about. I wish I got it!!!

It began with a movie…

About QueNieve Mary Poppins showed me my first snow globe, a snow that turned out to be birds fluttering around St. Paul’s Cathedral. It seemed like magic to me. I still have that first feeling, when I look at a snow globe I still see bits of magic trapped in a crystal sphere. Long after I came across a close-up of a snowball shattering as it fell from the hand of one of the most powerful cinematic characters, Citizen Kane. For years I thought “I’d love to have a snow globe” but I couldn’t find them. In Spain they are not as popular as in other countries. Also, I wanted a “glass” snow globe not a snowdome. I also had no luck at flea markets in other cities, Paris or London, perhaps because I did not visit them at Christmas time. The few I could find were in very bad condition, despite which I bought some of them.

…And followed by chance

Barneys snow globe restored by QueNieve On a trip, my only trip, to New York I discovered in a Soho store a second-hand snow globe in good condition. It was an advertising model for the famous Barneys department store, now defunct. This sort of establishments used to launch editions which they gave to the best customers as Christmas gift or put them on sale. Some of these snow globes are now valuable collector’s items. Mine cost me $5, and I went home happy as a cloud with it. Barneys snow globe spent a lot of time on a shelf. One day I realized that figures’ colours were very faded, the water cloudy… I thought if I could restore it. The results could only be twofold: I got it, or the ball ended up shattered. Detaching the sphere from the base without breaking the glass was the first challenge. I was lucky and succeeded. Then came repainting the figure, changing the “snow”, the water, mounting the ball again…, it was as good as new.

Custom snow globes

Customized snow globes After that first “success” I began to think about the possibility of creating my own snow globes. I spent hours on the internet reading everything I could find and putting it into practice. For my first creations I ordered wooden bases from a carpenter. I would get the spheres by buying “tourist snow globes”, the cheapest ones, which I would then break very carefully. One day a friend suggested that I make a snow globe ball with a figurine of Alf, the alien, which he had had for years. It was my first customized snow globe. My friend still has it and I still cherish the love with which I made it. Little by little I was discovering where to buy the materials, trying different ways of making, trying to delay the appearance of bubbles and, above all, learning from mistakes and practicing patience, lots of patience…. Along this time I have learned that rushing and making a snow globe don’t go well together.

And later came QueNieve

I had already made a few snow globes when I started to think about the possibility of sharing my hobby. I didn’t just want a website featuring the snow globes I make. I am not driven by commercial interest. I liked the idea of showcasing diverse content related to snow globes.

A universe built around snowballs defined precisely, and still does, what my goal was. I wanted that my web was a meeting place for those who enjoy snowballs as much as I do. What came next was, again, many hours thinking about the name, designing the “logo”, creating the website from scratch… without any previous experience. Once more learning from mistakes and having a lot of patience.

If you have reached QueNieve.es and you have liked any of its contents…. I will have achieved my goal!!!!. Thank you very much.
